DEPUTY MINISTER IVELINA VASILEVA LAUNCHES WATER SUPPLY AND SEWERAGE NETWORK PROJECT IN LOZNITSA

Deputy Minister of Environment and Water Ivelina Vasileva and the mayor of Loznitsa Municipality Aihan Ashimov held a groundbreaking ceremony for the start of the construction and reconstruction of the water supply and sewerage infrastructure of Loznitsa.

The official ceremony was also attended by Valentin Vasilev, head of regional administration Velingrad, Krasimir Mirev, mayor of Turgovishte and Ventsislav Nikolov, director of the Black Sea Basin Directorate.

According to deputy-minister Vasileva, the project represents a real anti-crisis measure since it will attract new investments, reduce unemployment and create new opportunities for local business. Furthermore, the local agriculture will also benefit from the project, since the sludge will be used for fertilizing, while the treated sewerage water - for irrigation.

Loznitsa Municipality is on a good track to successfully absorb the EU funds, Mayor Aihan Ashimov said. Not only the environment and households will benefit from the project, but also the local economy, which is a good sign that despite the crisis, things are developing in the right direction, Ashimov further said.

Valentin Vasilev, head of the regional administration Velingrad, praised the local administration for being the leading municipality in terms of the EU projects it has won so far.

The construction and reconstruction of the water supply and sewerage system of Loznitsa will cost over BGN 20 million, BGN 16 million of which are provided by the Cohesion Fund of Operational Programme "Environment 2007-2013", BGN 4 million are granted by the state budget and BGN 115,000 are secured by the Municipality.

After the completion of construction works, which is scheduled for mid-2012, it is expected that the whole town population will be served by the sewerage system and the waste water treatment system will be modernized. Consequently, the standard of living of the local population will improve.
