Minister Nona Karadjova and the Mayor of Botevgrad Municipality Georgi Georgiev signed a grant contract under OP Environment for establishment of the regional waste management system of Botevgrad region. The mayors of Pravets Municipality and Etropole Municipality also signed as contract partners.

Total project value is BGN 17.5 million. The contract under OP Environment is for BGN 14.5 million, including BGN 12.3 million from the European Regional Development Fund and the balance is national co-financing. The project implementation deadline is 1 March 2012.

Planned activities include design and construction of the first cell of a non-hazardous waste landfill, including supply of the equipment necessary for operation of the landfill, as well as construction of the approach technical infrastructure servicing only the sites of the regional waste management system. The municipality has also prepared a terrain for the construction of a regional waste management center. Minister Karadzhova congratulated the mayors of Botevgrad, Etropole and Pravets municipalities and expressed her belief that the joining of efforts will contribute for good, successful and timely project implementation.

The mayor of Botevgrad Municipality thanked Minister Karadzhova and the MOEW team for their cooperation that has helped to finance a long-term task of the municipality. Mr. Georgiev said that without the contract for the establishment of a regional waste management system in the region Botevgrad would not be able to fulfill its intention to be among the first ten towns of European type. He assured that the project will be implemented within shorter time limits and invited the minister to give official launch to construction works in early December.

At the briefing after the grant contract signing ceremony Minister Karadjova informed about the actions taken by MOEW to accelerate the development and implementation of projects under OPE, stressing that the funds for implementation of these projects have direct effect on the national economy.
