MALKO TARNOVO INVITED TO SUBMIT PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR ESTABLISHMENT OF A WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The Ministry of Environment and Water invited Malko Tarnovo Municipality to submit a project proposal for establishment of a regional waste management system. The indicative maximum amount of the grant following the invitation is BGN 2 538 311 and it may be increased if that is necessary and well justified.

The specific objective of procedure BG161PO005/10/2.10/06/21 Establishment of Malko Tarnovo Regional Waste Management System is construction of infrastructure for ecologically sound disposal of all household waste on the territory of the municipality.

The main activity investment will be targeted at is design, construction and equipment of the first cell of the non-hazardous waste landfill, as well as construction of the approach infrastructure to the regional system sites. The project proposal may include one or a combination of these activities. However, OPE will not finance activities related to collection and transportation of waste or for closing of existing landfills.

Malko Tarnovo Municipality is to submit its project for approval by 30 May 2011 at the latest and MOEW will give opinion within three months after it receives the documents.

To date, four projects are in the process of evaluation under priority axis 2 of OP Environment - of Burgas, Vidin and Pernik, and the proposal of Sofia Municipality is pending opinion by the European Commission. The project of Blagoevgrad has been approved recently and signing of a grant award contract is pending.

With the establishment of the 23 regional systems financed under the operational programme Bulgarian municipalities will achieve effective waste collection, separation, transportation, storage and disposal in line with European and Bulgarian legislation requirements.
