The Municipality of Razlog will receive BGN 8 million for modernising the water supply and sewerage system in the town. The Minister of Environment and Water Nona Karadjova and the Mayor of Razlog Krasimir Borisov have signed the contract for granting financial assistance under Operational Programme "Environment". The ceremony was also attended by the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov.
The project foresees the reconstruction of 8 km of old water mains and sewerage and the laying of 2 km of new pipes. The modernised network will serve over 5,000 citizens, while the break-downs will be reduced significantly. On completion of construction works in 2014, the whole population of the town will have a modern water supply and sewerage system connected to existing waste water treatment plant.
The implementation of the project will improve the quality of living in the region and reduce the pollution of river Mesta, mayor Gerchev said. Including this project, Razlog will receive a total grant of over BGN 18.5 million under the operational programmes, which exceeds the annual municipal budget, the mayor further said. All project proposals for which the municipality has already signed contracts have been developed only within a year.
Minister Karadjova expressed her wish that the Operational Programme "Environment" will be as quick as the Municipality of Razlog, which was the first to develop a project under the direct award procedure opened last year.
In turn, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said: "Actually, one of the things I dislike the most is to deal with water supply and sewerage, since the end results are not visible. People use them, but do not see them".
The contract for the improvement of the water infrastructure of Razlog is the first contract signed under the procedure, aimed at municipalities with poorer preparation. Such municipalities receive assistance both in the preparation of the projects and their implementation. In this way the time span between the concept and the actual construction is shortened and furthermore it is not necessary to apply under different procedures for the individual project phases. Project proposals for BGN 330 million under the same procedure are expected to be approved shortly for the water supply and sewerage systems of Aytos, Dryanovo, Chirpan, Levski, Radomir, Popovo, Elin Pelin and Smolyan.

The ceremony for signing the contract with Razlog was the closing event of a two-day seminar of the Operational Programme "Environment" with media representatives. At the meeting, Minister Nona Karadjova, deputy-minister Ivelina Vasileva and the director of OPE Malina Krumova represented the management and progress of the programme, while the Municipality of Razlog acquainted journalists with its good practices under EU projects.
