42 BIODIVERSITY PRESERVATION PROJECTS COMPETE FOR BGN 34 MILLION

A total of 42 projects were submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Water under direct award procedure "Activities on Preservation and Restoration of the Biodiversity in the Republic of Bulgaria", for which some BGN 34 million will be granted by Operational Programme "Environment".
Project proposals were submitted by five regional inspectorates of environment and water, three regional forests directorates, nine natural parks directorates, 16 municipalities and nine non-governmental organisations.

Candidates had five months to prepare their project proposals, while at the same time answers to questions about the application process were regularly published on the website of the operational programme.

The evaluation of the project proposals will be completed by the end of June. Their implementation will improve the conditions of endangered habitats and species and will reduce the harmful impact of human activity on their natural development.

The procedure for the preservation and restoration of the biodiversity is opened every year. In 2011, the scheme will be opened in December and will grant BGN 25 million to projects of municipalities, non-governmental organisations, structures at MOEW and the Executive Forests Agency. Funds which have not been absorbed under the current procedure may be added to this amount, provided that approved projects are worth less than BGN 34 million.
