THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FIRST SPECIALIZED ON THE BALKANS NURSERY GARDEN – GENE BANK IN PROTECTED AREAS STARTS

The construction of the first speciliazided on the Balkans nursery garden – gene bank in protected areas starts. Eleven rare species typical for Strandja will be restored and preserved. This is the aim of project “Preservation and restoration of rare and endangered plant species within Strandja Nature Park”, which is implemented by the Directorate of the park. The project is funded by Operational Programme “Environment 2007 – 2013” and it is of total amount of 734, 000 BGN.

In our country it is the only nursery garden in such a protected area, which will introduce an innovative practice of ex-situ “outside of the locality”. It will be built in Kachul next to Veleka River and will serve as a bank for seed and vegetative reproduction of endangered plants allowing a rapid response in case of proven inability of natural reproduction. At the same time it will be a gene bank for the exchange of genetic material with similar banks in Europe for scientific research.

This project is scheduled to begin next year with the cultivation of young plants produced from reproductive material collected from natural population of 11 species. Strandja soapwort (Saponaria stranjesis D. Lord) Heather (Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull, Pirenne (Erica arborea L.), Strandja (Caucasian) blueberry (Vaccinium arstostaphylos L.), Strandzha oak Lazhnik (Quercus hartwissiana Stev.), St John Staining (Hypericum androsaemum L.), St John cupped (Hypericum calycinum L>), Strandja (Crimea) tea, (Sideritis syriaca L.) Roll sow bread (cyclamen)(Cyclamen coum Mill.), Tarilovo speedwell (Veronica turrillliana Stoj. ET Stef), Otrovachka yew (TaxusbaccataL).

Along with the construction of facilities and the research activities. through various forms the project will promote and will raise awareness of local communities on rare and endangered species of Strandja. In Forest meeting in Grammatikovo village, the nearest location to the specialized nursery garden an exhibition “Rare and endangered species of Strandja”, was renovated and built which assumes the functions of visitor information center of Strandja Nature Park.
