MINISTER NONA KARADZHOVA INKS CONTRACT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF WATER SUPPLY AND SEWERAGE SYSTEM IN POPOVO

The Minister of Environment and Water Nona Karadzhova and the mayor of Popovo Lyudmil Veselinov have signed a contract for the construction of water infrastructure.

The euro funds will be used to complete the water supply and sewerage system of the town, which consists of nearly 8-km long sewerage system, 6 km-long water pipe and 7 km of collectors. Furthermore, a 1.5 km long water supply and sewerage system will be constructed in Nevski district and 1.3 km in Seyachi district. The existing waste water treatment plant will be equipped with a facility for phosphorus removal. This will ensure complete cleaning of waste water, which is now discharged into river Popovska, designated as "sensitive zone".
Once construction is completed in mid-2014, the whole population of Popovo will be connected to the sewerage system, the quality of drinking water will be improved and the water losses along the water pipe network will be reduced.

The municipality is applying under the procedure, aimed at beneficiaries with weaker preparation. Under this procedure there are six concluded contracts for BGN 229 million with Radomir, Levski, Razlog, Chirpan, Aitos and Dryanovo. Another 12 project proposals for a total of BGN 333 million of Tutrakan, Dulovo, Razgrad, Burgas (Meden Rudnik district and Sarafovo district), Nova Zagora, Pazardzhik, Elhovo, Varna (Golden Sands), Balchik (town and Albena resort) and Ihtiman are being evaluated. Two more projects for BGN 102 million of Elin Pelin and Smolyan are expected to be approved shortly.

Under the other open procedure for municipalities with ready projects for construction of water supply and sewerage system there are projects in the evaluation phase worth a total of BGN 340 million of Tryavna, Sofia Municipality, Tervel, Kozlodui, Knezha, Pirdop, Sredetz, Hisarya, Krichim, Peshtera, Montana, Veliki Preslav and Lovech.

The investment value of the projects submitted under the two schemes amounts to around BGN 1 billion. They should be implemented by the end of 2014.
