MOEW RECEIVES 8 PROJECTS FOR MANAGEMENT OF 10 SPECIAL PROTECTED AREAS FOR BIRDS

A total of 8 projects have been submitted under the procedure for development of management plans for special protected areas for birds not overlapping with the protected areas for habitats. The procedure is worth a total of BGN 3 million and is financed by the European Regional Development Fund through Operational Programme Environment.

The project proposals have been submitted by one municipality, two non-governmental organisations and five regional inspectorates of environment and water. The projects will be evaluated by the end of September. The ten special protected areas under the procedure include Berkovitza, Kocherinovo, Meshtitza, Orizishta Tzalapitza, Ovcharitza Reservoir, Zhrebchevo Reservoir, Konush, Yatata, Balchik and Chairya.

The major problems in these areas result from the impact of human activitiy on the natural development of the species, for example mowing during nesting period; removal of rice fields which have become a habitat for many rare birds; changes in the hydrological practice of agricultural farms, which lead to changes in soil humidity and last but not least active fishing and breeding of uncommon fish species, which affects the diet of birds.

The implementation of the projects is expected to help the restoration of rare bird populations, which are subject to protection under the EU Directives.
