IN PROGRESS IS THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PROJECTS FOR CLOSURE AND RECULTIVATION OF OLD LANDFILLS FOR MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE

In 2009 began a process for closure of old municipal landfills for domestic waste on the territory of Bulgaria that do not meet regulatory requirements. Landfills in municipalities Alfatar, Kaynardzha, Kresna, Boychinovtsi, Slivo pole, Sitovo, Valchedrum, Kaloyanovo, Rakovski, Vurshets, Venets, Zavet, Banite, Yakoruda and Kupa municipality were closed down. Recultivated area of closed old municipal landfills for municipal solid waste in 2010 and 2011 was 173 acres. Total value of the contracts is MBGN 4 471 087, funds are provided by the State budget and Operational programme “Environment 2007 – 2013”.

In 2012 EMEPA was approved as a beneficiary of Operational programme “Environment 2007 – 2013” by procedure for direct grant project assistance “Performing work on closure of municipal landfills in the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria that do not meet legislative requirements”  value of almost MBGN 97.Currently are already being carried out activities on closure and recultivation of landfills on territory of Sofia Municipality – Dolni Bogrov village and communities Dolni Chiflik. Dulovo, Kaspichan, Samuil, Elhovo, Kubrat, Ugarchin with total area about 702 acres of recultivation and secured financing of the amout of MBGN 38 890 838.

Municipalities Razgrad, Tsar Kaloyan, Suhindol, Brezovo, Hitrino, Borovo, Kostinbrod, Ruse, Veliki Preslav, Slivo pole and Kaolinovo are in process of conducting the tender procedure to select a contractor, as it is envisaged that activities for realization of projects for closure of old landfills to start its actual implementation in the spring of 2014. The total area which is subject to recultivation is approximately 563 acres and the value of recultivation activities amounts to MBGN 34 606 266. Upon completion of these projects will improve the living conditions of the population in the municipalities, once the process is finished will have a positive impact on 2.7 million citizens in Bulgaria.

Implementation of activities envisaged in the current contracts for closure and recultivation of out of operation municipal landfills for domestic waste will eliminate any risk to human health will ensure environmental protection and compliance with EU directives and national legislation in the field of waste management.
